Former Majority Leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has indicated his intention to address issues surrounding his recent resignation from the Majority Leader position by Friday.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stepped down from his role on Wednesday, February 21, following discussions between leaders of the majority caucus and the national leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His resignation came amidst speculations of a reshuffle in the leadership of the majority caucus, leading to tensions between the parliamentary group and the national leadership.
On his return to Parliament on Thursday, February 22, after his resignation, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu took a different seating position, opting for a seat immediately behind the front row, typically reserved for the Majority Leadership. During his time in Parliament, he engaged in discussions with fellow MPs before eventually departing the chamber.
While the NPP and the Majority Caucus are yet to formally announce the new leadership in Parliament, speculations abound that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader, is likely to be named the new Majority Leader. It is anticipated that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, will assume the role of Deputy Majority Leader. This transition would enable Habib Iddrisu, the First Deputy Chief Whip, to take up the position of Majority Chief Whip. Additionally, there is speculation regarding the appointment of either Patricia Appiagyei or Freda Prempeh as the new First Deputy Majority Chief Whip.
These changes come in the wake of the nomination of Lydia Seyram Alhassan as the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, necessitating adjustments within the parliamentary leadership.
