Termination of public sector appointments is correcting an illegality – Deputy Minister-Designate Yusif Sulemana

Deputy Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources Yusif Sulemana

Deputy Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, Yusif Sulemana, has defended the government’s decision to terminate public sector appointments that were allegedly made without due process under the previous administration.

His comments come after a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, instructing heads of government institutions to revoke all appointments and recruitments made after the December 7 elections. The directive cited irregularities and a lack of budgetary provisions as the basis for the cancellations.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Sulemana described the decision as a necessary corrective measure to ensure accountability in public sector hiring.

“When you do something wrong, someone will have to do something to correct it,” he stated. “I cannot imagine a situation where you will go ahead and employ people when you don’t have a budget for them. How then are they going to be paid?”

He added that it was in the interest of those affected to seek alternative employment rather than remain in positions without guaranteed salaries.

Sulemana also called for a broader national discussion on preventing outgoing governments from making last-minute appointments to favour party loyalists.

“Instances where you sit in the comfort of your office and select people and recruit them, and we ask them to go home for the proper thing to be done, I think it is the way to go,” he emphasized.
