University of Ghana launches satellite campuses in Takoradi and Kumasi

The (UG) has officially received accreditation and commenced operations at its new satellite campuses in and .

The announcement came from the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Nana Aba Amfo, during the second session of the graduation ceremonies for the School of Graduate Studies in .

According to Prof. Amfo, admissions to the two campuses are currently open, and the move is expected to enhance the UG brand and standards in the Ashanti and Western regions. She mentioned that the expansion would also create additional admission opportunities for undergraduate students.

The Vice-Chancellor's announcement was made during a series of graduation ceremonies, involving 15,549 students who completed their programs of study. This number includes 120 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), 3,389 Master's, 10,504 undergraduate, and 611 non-degree level students.

Prof. Amfo highlighted the university's efforts to improve student accommodation, introducing an Open Randomised Bed Allocation System to ensure fairness and transparency in bed allocation. The system aims to offer equal opportunities to all students, regardless of their internet connectivity status. She emphasized ongoing initiatives to increase accommodation options, including partnerships with private entities.

The university is actively engaged with private partners to expand student accommodation, and several projects, such as the Diamond Jubilee Hostel, GUSSS Student Hostel, and PhD apartments, are in progress. Prof. Amfo assured continued efforts to prioritize accommodation availability for students.

In terms of admissions, the Vice-Chancellor reported that the university had completed undergraduate admissions, with 14,072 students accepting offers for the 2023/2024 academic year. The gender distribution reflected a commitment to gender balance, with 49.7% male and 50.3% female students.

The graduation ceremonies included a charge from guest speaker Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, Senior Partner of in Ghana, urging graduates to be agents of positive change. He emphasized the importance of integrity and encouraged them to consider the role of faith in their lives.

Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse congratulated the graduates, acknowledging their hard work, while Valedictorian Charles Nutrokpor expressed gratitude for the teamwork and support that contributed to their academic success.
