Defending champions Senegal secured their place at the top of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B and stamped their entry into the Round of 16 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Guinea in Bouake.

The Lions of Teranga displayed their prowess with second-half goals by Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye.

Having won their first two matches, Senegal had already secured advancement to the next phase. However, the battle for the top spot ensued, with Guinea trailing by two points.

The deadlock in the match was finally broken just after the hour mark when Abdoulaye Seck capitalized on a Krepin Diatta assist to give Senegal the lead. Guinea, realizing their chances of progressing were in jeopardy, launched a desperate search for an equalizer.

However, Senegal's tactically sound defence held firm against the Guinea onslaught.

In a display of true championship style, the defending champions absorbed the pressure and sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute. Sadio Mane provided the assist, and Marseille forward Iliman Ndiaye finished expertly to secure the Lions of Teranga's 2-0 win.

Senegal's coach, Aliou Cissé, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting their good preparations since December. Cissé mentioned the tough group they faced but praised the team for winning all three matches.

Reflecting on the 2019 final defeat to Algeria, Cissé noted that the experience played a crucial role in their triumph two years later in Cameroon.

Guinea's coach, Kaba Diawara, acknowledged the excitement of the derby match and expressed regret over the loss.

Diawara emphasized their desire to win against the African champions but acknowledged Senegal's strength. Looking ahead, he mentioned their focus on recovery and preparation for the next match to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Senegal will now rest briefly before gearing up for the Round of 16, with Aliou Cissé emphasizing their goal of reaching the quarter-finals.
