In an effort to ensure a violence-free by-election in the Assin North Constituency of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service has taken significant security measures, including the deployment of drones and strict regulations at polling stations.

The decision was made during a meeting held with political party leaders and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

The deployment of drones aims to capture real-time situations of conflict and violence in conflict-prone areas, enabling authorities to respond swiftly.

Meanwhile, the prohibition of weapons at polling stations, as well as the supervision of the election by regular police personnel, contributes to maintaining a secure environment for voters.

During the closed-door meeting with political party leaders, the IGP emphasized the importance of abiding by election rules and avoiding actions that could compromise the area's security.

The Police Administration assured constituents of a peaceful election while warning against any disruptive behavior.

Furthermore, the meeting established several ground rules, including the prohibition of motorbikes and mobile phones at polling stations, as well as the exclusion of party paraphernalia from the polling centers.

These regulations aim to maintain order and prevent potential disturbances during the voting process.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has also made adequate provisions to ensure the smooth running of the election. Most polling stations are located in schools, minimizing the impact of rain on the voting process.

For uncovered locations, canopies will be utilized to ensure uninterrupted voting. Additionally, the EC stated that all voting materials, including ballot boxes, will be protected in polythene bags to prevent damage from possible rainfall.

Traditional authorities in the constituency have emphasized the importance of peace during the election. The Chief of Assin Dansame, Okofo Dr Twum Barimah, urged constituents to refrain from actions that could disrupt the area's peace.

He called on security personnel to create a conducive environment for voters and ensure there is no intimidation or threats.

Leaders of the major political parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed their willingness to comply with the ground rules and collaborate with the police to maintain peace during the election.

The NDC and NPP candidates, James Gyakye Quayson and Charles Opoku, respectively, will compete in the two-horse race for the constituency's parliamentary seat.

The by-election, considered critical in determining the country's legislative control, is expected to witness a turnout of 41,168 constituents at the 99 polling stations in Assin North.

Despite recent rainfall and the removal of the previous Member of Parliament, residents expressed their determination to participate in the election and select their representative.

Overall, the deployment of drones, strict security measures, and collaboration among stakeholders aim to ensure a peaceful and successful by-election in Assin North.
