Ms. Eva Andorful, the Eastern Regional Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), has advocated for the provision of wheelchairs at public places to ease the movement of persons with disabilities.
Addressing the Regional celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disability in Koforidua, she emphasized the challenges faced by members with mobility issues.
“Some of our members don't use wheelchairs, but their conditions prevent them from accessing critical public services in offices located on storey buildings,” Ms. Andorful stated, highlighting the need for practical solutions beyond wheelchairs.
She urged public offices to consider the diverse needs of persons with disabilities, especially those using assistive devices like callipers, who find it challenging to climb staircases.
Ms. Andorful emphasized the importance of such measures until the full functionality of the Disability Act.
Expressing disappointment at the delays in implementing the Act, she called for immediate action, particularly regarding facilities for disabled persons in infrastructure development.
Mrs. Deborah Daisy Kwabea, the Eastern Regional Director of Social Welfare, urged disability group leaders to persist in advocating for their rights, emphasizing that access to public spaces and services is a fundamental right.
Mr. Isaac Apau-Gyasi, the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive, assured swift implementation of the concerns raised, pledging immediate action by his office.
The call for enhanced accessibility underscores the ongoing challenges faced by persons with disabilities and emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to ensure inclusivity.
