The Ghana Education Service (GES), in partnership with UNESCO and Beijing Normal University, has empowered young girls with practical skills, confidence and inspiration to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through a five-day residential Girls-in-Tech STEM Camp.
The camp was held from August 24 to 28, 2026, at Wesley College of Education in Kumasi under the theme, “Closing the Digital Divide and Empower Girls through Education.”

The programme brought together students from five all-girls Senior High Schools. Participants included 20 students each from St. Monica’s Senior High School, Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Senior High School and Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, as well as five students each from Mancels Girls’ Senior High Technical School and Bosomtwe Girls’ Senior High School.
Participants took part in hands-on technology activities, collaborative projects, mentorship sessions and personal development workshops aimed at enhancing creativity, problem-solving, leadership and digital confidence.
A major highlight of the camp was an educational tour to the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and DEXT Technology Limited. The visits exposed the girls to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital innovation, and provided insight into research, entrepreneurship and career opportunities within the technology sector.
The camp also featured mentorship sessions led by women in technology and STEM-related professions. The mentors encouraged participants to believe in their abilities, pursue academic and career goals, and embrace leadership opportunities in fields where women continue to be underrepresented.
The camp enabled participants to explore possibilities in STEM and envision themselves as future engineers, technology innovators, artificial intelligence specialists and leaders. The experience broadened their understanding of STEM careers and strengthened their aspirations to contribute to Ghana’s digital transformation.
The Girls-in-Tech STEM Camp forms part of the Ghana Education Service’s broader commitment to closing the digital divide and promoting equitable access to quality STEM education for girls.
Through the initiative, GES and its partners are investing in young women equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to innovate, lead and contribute to an increasingly technology-driven world.
