Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa dismisses claims US visa reversal is linked to deportees

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on South African authorities to intensify efforts to end the ongoing xenophobic attacks, describing the violence as damaging to Africa’s image.

Speaking in Accra on July 27 while receiving another group of Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa, Mr. Ablakwa said Ghana would continue diplomatic engagements with South Africa to ensure the safety of foreign nationals.

The latest evacuation flight brought about 150 Ghanaians home, with around 1,000 more expected to return under the government’s voluntary evacuation programme.

Mr. Ablakwa assured the returnees of continued government support, including travel and reintegration allowances, employment assistance, healthcare, and psychological counselling.

He also pledged that Ghana would pursue compensation for properties abandoned in South Africa and confirmed that all evacuated Ghanaians had been screened, with none found to have criminal records.

The evacuation follows weeks of anti-migrant violence in South Africa, which has claimed the lives of two Ghanaians and forced thousands of foreign nationals to flee.

# Government declines MTN's GHS20 million donation offer for Ghanaian victims of xenophobic attacks The Government of Ghana has declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GHS20 million to support Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. In a press statement issued on August 26, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had become aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation. According to the Ministry, the reports attributed the announcement of the intended GHS20 million donation to an interview granted by MTN Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson. The Government commended MTN for the offer but said it was unable to accept it. The Ministry explained that the Mahama Administration had made adequate provision for the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of Ghanaians affected by the attacks. It said the Government's position had earlier been directly communicated to the MTN Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), on August 14, 2026. The Government said it remains fully committed to providing humanitarian evacuation and reintegration financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm's way. The Ministry also assured the public that it would present a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuations after the exercise had been concluded, in the interest of transparency and accountability. It added that the Government would continue to create the best business ecosystem for all international brands operating in Ghana to succeed, irrespective of the country from which their businesses originated. “The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the statement said.
