The people of Ga Mashie over the weekend celebrated this year’s Homowo Festival with colourful cultural displays, traditional rites and visits by prominent national figures.

The principal streets of Jamestown came alive as residents, traditional leaders and tourists joined the festivities, with the rhythmic beating of the Odadaoo drums led by the Gbese Mantse setting the tone for the celebration.

Clad in colourful traditional regalia, chiefs and elders participated in processions and durbars that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Ga people.

Among the dignitaries who attended the celebrations were Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

As part of the festival, the traditional meal, kpokpoi and palm nut soup, was prepared and ritually sprinkled throughout the community in accordance with Ga customs.

The Homowo Festival, which translates as “hooting at hunger”, commemorates the triumph of the Ga people over a historic famine and serves as a celebration of resilience, unity and thanksgiving.

The annual celebration follows a traditional sequence among Ga communities, beginning with Nungua before moving through Lante Dzan We Clan, Tema, Ga Mashie, La, Osu, Teshie, Kpone, Prampram and finally Ningo.

The festivities also featured performances by the Ghana Dance Ensemble at Sempe We, where traditional rituals were held to announce the presence of the Sempe Mantse, Nii Adote Otintor II.

Another highlight of the celebration was the Twins Yam Festival, during which participants were paraded through the streets as part of longstanding cultural traditions.

Over the years, the centuries-old Homowo Festival has continued to strengthen unity among the Ga people while serving as an important platform for preserving and promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage.
