The administration of President John Dramani Mahama has announced a scaled-down Independence Day celebration for 2025, moving the national parade to Jubilee House as a cost-cutting measure.
Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, revealed that the government has suspended the regional rotational policy for the celebration, citing unsustainable costs. The last event, held in Ho in 2023, cost the nation GHS 15 million.

“While the rotational policy was introduced with good intentions, a review has shown that it imposes additional financial burdens. Given the country’s current economic challenges, President Mahama has directed that the national celebration be scaled down to reduce non-essential expenditure,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.
Traditionally held in Accra‘s Independence Square, this year’s ceremony will instead take place at Jubilee House, the seat of government. While acknowledging the significance of Independence Day, the minister emphasized that the government must prioritize essential spending amid economic difficulties.
President Mahama, he added, believes a modest yet meaningful celebration can be held without placing further strain on the national budget.
