The Government of Ghana has summoned South Africa‘s Acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, over recent xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
In a statement issued on April 23, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move was to formally express strong concern over reported intimidation and harassment captured in widely circulated videos.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa cited an incident in KwaZulu-Natal where a Ghanaian resident was confronted, asked to prove his legal status, and told to leave the country. He described such actions as undermining the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.
The Minister noted reports of rising tensions, with some foreign nationals advised to remain indoors for safety, and warned against a repeat of past incidents that led to loss of lives and property.
He stressed that such conduct contradicts African unity and solidarity, recalling Ghana’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Ghana has formally protested and called for immediate measures to protect its citizens, prevent further escalation, and ensure such incidents do not recur.
The Acting High Commissioner acknowledged the concerns and said South African authorities are monitoring the situation, working to restore calm, and hold those responsible accountable.
