Ghana battalion in UN mission conducts readiness drill in Abyei

The Ghana Armed Forces contingent serving under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has carried out a major readiness exercise aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and combat preparedness.

The exercise, conducted by Ghana Battalion 4 (GHANBATT 4) on March 26, 2026, took place at the battalion’s headquarters in Athony. It formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure troops remain alert and capable of responding to potential security threats within their area of operations.

The drill was supervised by a delegation from the UNISFA Force Headquarters, led by Lieutenant Colonel Abdou Jatta, Deputy Chief of Operations. The visit was part of a routine assessment to evaluate the battalion’s responsiveness, discipline, and adherence to established military procedures.

During the stand-to drill,an essential military exercise designed to test rapid response,troops swiftly moved into position and executed coordinated defensive strategies. Observers noted a high level of discipline, professionalism, and situational awareness among the personnel.

Lt. Col. Jatta commended the Ghanaian troops for their performance, describing it as a reflection of their strong commitment to operational excellence and mission objectives. He emphasized the importance of regular drills in maintaining vigilance and readiness in complex peacekeeping environments.

Commanding Officer of GHANBATT 4, Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Nbaamundoh Nanjo, expressed appreciation to the visiting team for their assessment and feedback. He reaffirmed the battalion’s dedication to continuous training and improvement to meet the evolving demands of international peacekeeping duties.

Ghana continues to play a significant role in global peacekeeping operations, with its troops widely recognized for professionalism and discipline in conflict zones.
