The bombardment killed the former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, along with several members of his family. Mojtaba Khamenei, who was also present during the attack, sustained injuries but survived.
Iranian authorities say the 56-year-old leader was “lightly injured but active”, although he has not appeared publicly since being selected by the Assembly of Experts as the country’s new supreme leader. His absence from public events has fueled speculation about the extent of his injuries and his current location.
Reports indicate that Khamenei may have suffered injuries to his legs and face during the airstrikes, which destroyed part of the compound where he and other family members were staying. Some sources suggest he sustained a fractured foot and other minor wounds.
Iranian state media has described him as a “war-wounded veteran” of the ongoing conflict, while government officials insist he remains safe and capable of leading the country.
The airstrikes marked the beginning of a broader military confrontation between Iran and its adversaries, escalating tensions across the Middle East.
The death of Ali Khamenei and the injury of his successor have raised concerns about political stability in Iran as the country navigates one of the most serious crises in its recent history.
