Senegal restricts internet access amidst spread of "hateful messages" on social media

has taken measures to restrict access to internet services starting Monday due to the dissemination of “hateful messages” on , according to the communications minister's statement.

This move comes in the aftermath of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko being charged with plotting an insurrection, criminal conspiracy, and other offences on Saturday.

The possibility of Sonko's conviction preventing him from running in the next presidential election has incited his supporters, leading to tensions and concerns over online content.

“Telephone operators are required to comply with the notified requirements,” stated communications minister Moussa Bocar Thiam, implying the implementation of internet restrictions in response to the situation.
