The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has contributed to peace-building efforts in Northern Ghana by donating two vehicles to the National Peace Council. The vehicles are designated for use by the Northern and Savannah Regional Peace Councils.
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinders aim to enhance the mobility of the regional councils, enabling them to mediate local conflicts when necessary.
The vehicles will also facilitate the delivery of conflict resolution training to chiefs and community members, empowering them to resolve disputes within their communities.
Madam Kimberly A. Rosen, USAID Mission Director, emphasized the fruitful partnership between USAID, the National Peace Council (NPC), and the two regional Peace Councils in promoting peaceful conflict resolution in Northern Ghana.
She expressed commitment to the cause, stating, “USAID is committed to promoting peace in Northern Ghana. Through our joint efforts, we've been strengthening local communities and traditional authorities, promoting social cohesion, and preventing conflict.”
Madam Rosen praised the dedication of the Northern Regional Peace Council, particularly in collaboration with the Dagbon Traditional Council, as a testament to their commitment to peace and development in the region.
She highlighted that these efforts align with the strategic objectives of the U.S. Government's Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability (SPCPS).
USAID's support extends beyond vehicle donations, focusing on strengthening the capacity of local and traditional authorities, fostering resilience and social cohesion, and encouraging locally-led solutions to conflict and violence prevention.
Notably, the collaborative efforts between USAID and the Northern Regional Peace Council resulted in the revision of the Dagbon constitution from 1930. This initiative fortifies traditional governance and provides a roadmap for chieftaincy succession in the Dagbon Traditional Area.
