Tema Development Corporation announces large-scale housing project in Volta Region

The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) Ghana Limited has unveiled plans to launch a major housing development project in the Volta Region, starting in Ho, as part of its nationwide expansion strategy.

The initiative, announced by Mr Courage K.M. Nunekpeku, Managing Director of TDC, is designed to extend the company’s expertise in planned housing beyond Tema to other regions, including the Eastern, Western, Ashanti, and Central regions. TDC has secured approximately 1,800 acres of land from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources for the project, which will feature modern estates.

“Since our establishment in 1952, we have successfully managed almost 64,000 square miles in Tema and its environs. Volta Region is our starting point. We already have the budget and intend to commence work this year, but before we begin, it is proper to seek your permission, blessings, and guidance,” Mr Nunekpeku said, accompanied by his management and technical teams tasked with land assessments.

Representing the Ministry, Mr Ebenezer Sam, Director of Housing, emphasized that the project aligns with government policy to decentralize affordable housing delivery and meets the growing accommodation needs of professionals, including teachers, doctors, nurses, and students in the region.

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, described the announcement as “great news,” noting that it complements President Mahama’s recent $10 billion Big Push infrastructure programme in Ho. He highlighted that housing shortages, estimated at over 1.8 million units nationwide, have long been a challenge, and TDC’s expansion would not only address accommodation gaps but also create jobs.

Togbe Afede pledged the full support of traditional leaders and urged that the new estates be environmentally sustainable, in line with Ho’s reputation as the “Oxygen City.” Mr Stephen Adom, Municipal Chief Executive for Ho, also expressed commitment from the local assembly to support the initiative.

Stakeholders emphasized that the project represents a strategic effort to reduce Ghana’s housing deficit, generate employment, improve infrastructure, and enhance quality of life in the Volta Region.

In addition to the housing announcement, TDC contributed GH¢20,000 to support the Asogli Yam Festival and GH¢30,000 to the Asogli Educational Trust Fund, underscoring its commitment to community development.

This expansion marks a significant step toward decentralizing planned housing delivery in Ghana, reducing the reliance on Tema as the sole model for large-scale residential developme
