South Africa could face FIFA sanctions after inadvertently fielding 12 players during an international friendly against Nicaragua.
The incident occurred in the second half of the match, which ended in a 0-0 draw. According to reports, South Africa introduced three substitutes around the 67th minute, but only two players left the field, leaving the team with 11 outfield players and a goalkeeper for approximately two to three minutes.

The error was not detected by match officials, coaching staff, or the opposing team during the game. It was reportedly discovered three days later during a review on a South African television sports programme, where a referee identified the extra player while analysing match footage.
Under FIFA regulations, a team is not permitted to have more than 11 players on the field. If an extra player is identified during a match, the referee is required to stop play and caution the player involved.
Although no action was taken during the game, FIFA could still review the incident and impose sanctions. One possible outcome is the forfeiture of the match, with Nicaragua being awarded a 3-0 victory.
Such a decision could also affect South Africa’s FIFA ranking, as a loss to lower-ranked Nicaragua would result in a reduction in ranking points.
The incident has added to concerns over administrative lapses in South African football. Previous issues have included the loss of points in a World Cup qualifying campaign due to an administrative error and travel disruptions involving visa problems for team officials and players.
FIFA has not yet announced whether it will investigate the matter or take disciplinary action.
