Government to build modern stadiums in three regions from 2026 to boost sports infrastructure and talent development, says Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson

The government will begin constructing modern stadiums in three regions starting in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure and nurture athletic talent, Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson has announced.

Dr Forson revealed the plan while presenting the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to parliament under the theme “Resetting for Growth, Jobs and Economic Transformation.” Highlighting the challenges faced by some newly created regions, he noted that the lack of proper sports facilities has made it difficult to develop young athletes.

“Beginning in 2026, the government will commence the construction of modern stadiums in three out of the eight regions without sports stadiums.

These facilities will provide opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills, attract sports tourism and serve as training hubs for regional and national teams,” Dr Forson stated.

In addition to the main stadium projects, the government has allocated GH¢200 million for the construction of mini-stadiums aimed at promoting grassroots sports across the country.

This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance sports development, create jobs, and position the regions as hubs for athletic excellence and tourism.
