The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that professional boxing in Ghana will resume on Thursday, November 6, 2025, following a suspension earlier this year.
The ban, imposed in September 2025, came after the death of young boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali.”

In a statement, the NSA said the decision to lift the suspension follows successful consultations between the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) overseeing boxing’s normalisation process.
The IMC reported substantial progress in addressing the issues that prompted the ban, particularly in enhancing medical and safety protocols, as well as improving governance and administrative frameworks.
“The NSA commends the IMC, athletes, boxing stakeholders, and the entire sporting community for their patience, diligence, and cooperation during this period of reform,” the statement said.
It added that the Authority looks forward to a vibrant return of professional boxing and encourages both local and international promoters and investors to bring bouts and collaborations to Ghana under the strengthened standards.
Key measures implemented include the publication of medical and safety manuals, the establishment of a functional interim medical commission, the creation of a centralised medical database, the approval of an insurance framework, and the introduction of sustainable medical support systems.
The NSA also pledged to work closely with partners to ensure a professional and sustainable future for boxing, prioritising athlete welfare and institutional integrity, while restoring public confidence in the sport.
