NSA to Lift Suspension on Professional Boxing on November 6, 2025

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has confirmed that the suspension placed on professional boxing in Ghana will be lifted on Thursday, November 6, 2025, paving the way for the sport’s full return after nearly two months of inactivity.

The suspension, announced in September 2025, followed the tragic death of young boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali. His passing prompted sweeping safety reviews across the sport.

According to the NSA, the decision to reinstate boxing activities comes after extensive consultations involving the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Interim Management Committee (IMC), which was tasked with leading reforms during the normalisation process. The IMC reported significant progress in key areas such as strengthened medical protocols, governance reforms, and administrative improvements.

The NSA commended athletes, promoters, and the broader sporting community for their patience and cooperation throughout the period of reform. It urged both local and international promoters to take advantage of the improved systems to bring more world-class boxing events to Ghana.

Key Improvements Implemented

  • Establishment of a functional interim medical commission
  • Creation of a centralised medical database
  • Approval of a comprehensive insurance framework for boxers
  • Commitment to sustainable medical support systems

The Authority emphasised that educational campaigns and stakeholder engagements will continue in the coming weeks to introduce new partnerships aimed at elevating the welfare of Ghanaian boxers and strengthening the sport’s brand.
