Ghana’s Black Stars were reportedly kept in the dressing room for more than two hours after their 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Vice-President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Mark Addo, described the incident as a frightening experience, revealing that the team had to take cover after angry Nigerian supporters invaded the pitch following the match.

Some Ghanaian players, including captain Thomas Partey, were allegedly targeted with empty plastic bottles as they moved through the tunnel to the dressing room.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Ghana secured qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar through the away goals rule after the two-legged play-off ended 1-1 on aggregate.
Mr. Addo praised the team’s determination, saying the qualification was achieved through hard work despite many doubting Ghana’s chances.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo congratulated the Black Stars, saying their qualification had brought joy to Ghanaians and expressing hope for a strong performance at the tournament.
