Majority Leader affirms ministers cannot avoid parliamentary accountability

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has made it clear that no minister will be shielded from appearing before Parliament to answer questions from Members of Parliament (MPs).

Speaking in the Chamber on Friday, Mr Ayariga emphasised that ministers are expected to attend sessions after a three-week notice, except in cases beyond their control.

His statement followed concerns from MPs regarding the absence of some ministers during scheduled question sessions.

Addressing complaints that ministers were not always notified in time, Mr Ayariga assured that his office would assist in coordinating ministerial attendance to ensure obligations to Parliament are met.

He noted that, on average, about 16 questions are posed daily, and ministers have generally complied with attendance requirements.

The Majority Leader reiterated that there is no mechanism to shield ministers from accountability, underlining Parliament’s commitment to transparency and oversight.

Mr Ayariga’s comments highlight the central role of ministerial responsibility and reinforce the principle that government officials must remain answerable to the people’s representatives.
