Ghana leads historic global justice victory at the United Nations

Ghana has achieved a landmark moment on the global stage following the adoption of a powerful resolution at the United Nations General Assembly. Championed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the resolution declares the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.

The resolution, officially known as A/80/L.48, received overwhelming support from 123 UN Member States. This broad international backing reflects a growing global recognition of the deep injustices suffered by millions during the transatlantic slave trade.

For centuries, over 12.5 million Africans were forcibly taken from their homelands, subjected to unimaginable suffering, and stripped of their humanity.

This resolution represents more than just words on paper,it is a symbolic restoration of dignity, identity, and historical truth for Africans and people of African descent across the world.

Ghana played a leading role in building consensus for this resolution, working closely with international partners, technical experts, and diplomatic missions in key global cities such as New York, Addis Ababa, and Geneva. The effort demonstrates the country’s commitment to advocating for justice beyond its borders.

Special recognition has also been given to John Mahama for his leadership and dedication to advancing this cause. His involvement highlights Ghana’s consistent stance on issues of historical accountability and reparatory justice.

This development marks a significant step toward addressing the enduring impact of slavery. While it does not erase the past, it strengthens the global call for reparations and meaningful acknowledgment of historical wrongs.

Ultimately, this resolution stands as a victory not only for Ghana but for humanity as a whole. It signals a renewed commitment by the international community to confront painful histories and pursue justice with courage and unity.
