The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained former Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, over issues relating to the status of his current stay in the United States.

According to a public notice issued by the law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, the detention occurred as of yesterday. The statement said Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team in the United States is in contact with ICE and expects the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

The notice explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a process which, under US law, permits an individual to remain legally in the country beyond the validity period of their visa. It added that such a change of status is common under US immigration law.

The public has therefore been advised that Mr. Ofori-Atta, described as a law-abiding person, is fully cooperating with ICE to have the issue resolved.

The statement was signed by Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo, Esq., and dated 7th January, 2026.
