U.S donates 1.7 million Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine doses to Ghana

The United States has donated 1.7 million doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to Ghana, with the shipment arriving at Kotoka International Airport. U.S. Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan and Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu received the vaccines on behalf of the two countries.

Ambassador Sullivan said the vaccines were a gift from the American people and encouraged Ghanaians to get vaccinated, describing the jabs as the best protection against severe illness from Covid-19.

Since September, the United States has supplied more than seven million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Ghana through the COVAX initiative and UNICEF.

The donation forms part of President Joe Biden’s global commitment to donate 1.2 billion vaccine doses. The U.S. has also announced an additional $580 million in funding to support international efforts to combat the pandemic, strengthen public health systems, and provide humanitarian assistance worldwide.
