The Government of Ghana on Monday, August 17, 2026, received the 11th batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa under the second phase of the evacuation exercise following xenophobic attacks in the country.
The 87 returnees were welcomed at the Accra International Airport by the Coordinating Director, Political and Economic, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Harold Agyeman, accompanied by Management and Staff of the Ministry and other senior government officials.

Ambassador Agyeman assured the returnees of Government’s continued commitment to supporting their successful reintegration into their communities and encouraged them to keep hope alive.
He urged them to draw on the skills and experiences gained in South Africa to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.
Stressing the importance of African unity, peaceful coexistence and solidarity among African peoples, Ambassador Agyeman noted that despite the challenges they had faced in South Africa, Ghanaians and South Africans remained part of the broader African family.
He also announced the modest packages being provided under the evacuation exercise, under the leadership and direction of President John Dramani Mahama, to facilitate the resettlement and reintegration of the returnees into their respective communities.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the evacuees expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana, particularly the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his staff, for facilitating their safe return and supporting them upon arrival.
The returnees also expressed appreciation to Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and other stakeholders for their assistance throughout the evacuation process.
Representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross, Port Health authorities and other relevant institutions were present at the airport to provide assistance and ensure the smooth transition and reintegration of the returnees into their communities.
The latest arrival brings to about 1,600 the number of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa since May 2026.
About 300 more Ghanaians are expected to arrive in the coming weeks to bring the second phase of the evacuation exercise to a close.
