Teachers and students in Sunyani West trained on cyber-security and digital safety by AFRISTEMI

Teachers and school children at Odomase Model School and Presbyterian Junior High School in the Sunyani West Municipality have completed a three-day training on digital space and cybersecurity.

The programme was facilitated by the Africa Rural Internet and STEM Initiative (AFRISTEMI) to commemorate the 2025 Global Encryption Day under the theme “From Classroom to Cyberspace: Staying Safe with Encryption.”

Global Encryption Day, observed annually on October 21, promotes and defends encryption worldwide, supporting efforts by companies to provide encrypted services to users.

The training in Odomase, the Municipal capital, was jointly organised by the Global Encryption Coalition, the Internet Society’s Cyber Security Special Interest Group, and the Online Safety Specialist Interest Group.

Participants were exposed to online information security practices, including generating strong passwords, understanding encryption fundamentals, data protection, and safeguarding private information for a secure online presence. Other topics covered included identifying online dangers, cyberbullying, and sextortion.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the closing session, Mr Shadrach Ankrah, Founder and Executive Director of AFRISTEMI, emphasised the importance of equipping teachers and students to stay safe online.

He highlighted that the training enabled participants to recognise malicious behaviours, protect their digital identities, and “turn them from potential victims into vigilant users,” allowing them to explore the digital realm securely.
