Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reiterated government’s commitment to inclusive education and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, following a meeting with the leadership of New Horizon Special School.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang received Ms. Nilla Selormey and Ms. Vicky Wireko-Andoh, members of the school’s board, together with Dr. George Francois, a board member and Executive Director of the institution.

New Horizon Special School provides education, vocational training, and employment opportunities for children and adults with special needs.
The Vice President acknowledged the critical role the institution plays in supporting individuals who are often marginalized in society and commended its leadership, teachers, and staff for their dedication and sacrifice.
She described the meeting as an opportunity to recognize the value of special education and to reaffirm a shared responsibility to support persons with disabilities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that special education is essential not only for children with special needs but also for their parents and guardians.
She noted that with the right tools, understanding, and empathy, society can better appreciate individual differences and respond appropriately, stressing that differences should never be grounds for exclusion.
She further called on society to remove barriers that limit the full participation of persons with disabilities, underscoring that national unity must include creating space for everyone.
According to her, people with disabilities possess diverse abilities and make valuable contributions that must be recognized and supported.
The Vice President highlighted the importance of Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy in ensuring that children with special needs receive the necessary support.
She also acknowledged the vital role played by families, caregivers, advocates, and development partners in advancing inclusive education.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured the delegation of government’s commitment to working closely with institutions such as New Horizon Special School to strengthen inclusive education and ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
