Construction of a GH¢15 million synthetic athletic track at Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast is expected to commence at the end of the month as part of efforts to transform sports development at the institution.
The project, funded by the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA), is expected to be completed within six months and forms the fourth phase of the school’s “Kwabotwe Centre of Sports Excellence” initiative.

The facility will comprise an eight-lane synthetic running track, a 300-seat spectators’ and dignitaries’ stand, as well as changing rooms and washroom facilities.
The sports complex is intended to serve not only Mfantsipim School but also as a sports resource centre for other schools within the Cape Coast metropolis.
The athletic track follows the successful completion of three earlier phases of the project since 2020, including the construction of a basketball court with changing rooms and washrooms, an artificial AstroTurf football pitch and improvements to the school’s water supply system.
Speaking at the eighth MOBA Annual National Conference in Accra, Chairman of the 147th Speech and Prize-Giving Day Sponsoring Year Groups, Sekyere Owusu Antwi, said all preparations had been completed for construction to begin.
He expressed confidence that the project would be completed in time for its planned inauguration during the school’s annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day in November.
Presenting his annual report, the Headmaster, Rev. Ebenezer Aidoo, said 63.9 per cent of the school’s candidates obtained grades A1 to B3 in the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, compared with 68.9 per cent in 2021.
He disclosed that the school had introduced special classes for first-year students with lower entry aggregates and would reduce class sizes to a maximum of 40 students to improve academic performance.
The MOBA Ebusuapanyin, Captain Paul Fordjoe, commended members of the association for their continued commitment to the development of the school and encouraged them to sustain their support.
The 147th Speech and Prize-Giving Day is scheduled for November 11 under the theme: “Hɛn Nananom Botaepa: The Role of Digital Technology in Redefining Quality and Sustainable Education in Ghana.”
