AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, has cut the sod for the construction of a 24-unit classroom block for the Obuasi cluster of schools in the Obuasi Municipality.
The project, expected to be one of the largest and most modern public basic school facilities in Ghana, is designed to help bridge infrastructural gaps within the education sector by providing a safe, functional and conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.

The new facility will feature sick bays for males and females, offices for the head teacher and assistants, staff common rooms, an ICT laboratory, a library, a general assembly hall, a cafeteria, additional offices, washrooms, and toilet facilities.
Mr Edmund Oduro Agyei, the Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, said at the ceremony that the project aligns with the Mine’s purpose statement of “Mining to empower people and advance societies.” He added that the initiative also fulfils AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment under its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) to enhance access to quality education in its host communities.
Mr Agyei noted that when completed, the facility would help improve teaching and learning and further promote quality education in the area.
Mr George Alfred Koomson, the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its continuous support toward improving education in the municipality. He highlighted the company’s notable contributions, including the provision of educational infrastructure, supply of learning materials, and teacher capacity-building programmes.
“We have witnessed a remarkable improvement in education in Obuasi, thanks to the invaluable contributions of AngloGold Ashanti. This 24-unit classroom block further demonstrates our unwavering dedication to providing a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning,” he said.
As part of AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to promoting local economic growth and empowering local contractors, two Obuasi-based firms, Kilon Company Ltd. and Erok Ghana Ltd., have been awarded the contract to execute the project within 16 months.
