In a recorded presentation played to journalists at the SSNIT Media Connect event in Tamale, Mr Biney revealed that over 120,000 self-employed persons were enrolled in the SSNIT scheme in 2023, a significant step towards expanding social protection coverage for informal sector workers.
The event, part of SSNIT’s Social Security @60 celebrations launched in July, aimed to strengthen engagement with the media and promote accurate communication on social protection and pension-related issues.
Mr Biney described Social Security @60 as “more than a milestone,” saying it symbolised a renewed commitment “to protect the dignity of work and secure the future of generations to come.”
He noted that SSNIT currently operates 57 branches nationwide and has partnered with banks to extend its reach. Plans are also underway to launch a 24/7 virtual branch to enable contributors and pensioners to access SSNIT services anytime and anywhere.
Speaking at the event, Mr Frank Molbila, General Manager of Operations, said SSNIT remains the single largest institutional investor on the Ghana Stock Exchange, underscoring its vital role in national development.
He disclosed that SSNIT’s total investment portfolio currently stands at GH¢24.5 billion, comprising GH¢11.7 billion in equities, GH¢6.8 billion in treasury bills, GH¢5.4 billion in real estate, and GH¢459 million in economic empowerment projects.
“For 60 years, SSNIT has stood beside workers throughout their journeys. For the next 60 years, we will walk even closer — powered by innovation, guided by integrity, and inspired by trust,” Mr Molbila said.
Mr Seth Quartey, Tamale Area Manager of SSNIT, described the Social Security @60 initiative as “a celebration of six decades of service, transformation, and dedication to securing the future of workers in Ghana.”
Mrs Jemilatu Mahamadu, Marketing Manager of SSNIT, commended media practitioners for their insights and collaboration, emphasising that “our collective goal is to make social security simpler, more accessible, and relevant to every worker across Ghana.”
