Speaker Bagbin donates GH¢100,000 to support victims of El-Wak Stadium stampede

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical care of victims injured during the stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

The tragic incident, which occurred during the Ghana Armed Forces‘ (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, claimed six lives and left more than 28 others injured, following a rush by thousands of job seekers who had thronged the venue for screening.

Mr Bagbin, accompanied by members of the Parliamentary Leadership and the Defence and Interior Committee, visited the injured at the 37 Military Hospital to express Parliament‘s sympathy and solidarity with the victims and their families.

He said the donation was to help ease the financial burden of medical expenses and to demonstrate Parliament’s compassion for those affected.

“The lives lost and injuries sustained are deeply troubling. It is a national tragedy that calls for sober reflection and urgent reform of our public recruitment processes to ensure such an incident never happens again,” Mr Bagbin said.

He called for a comprehensive review of recruitment procedures across all public institutions to ensure transparency, order, and safety during large-scale enlistment exercises.

The Ghana Armed Forces has since suspended the ongoing recruitment pending investigations into the causes of the stampede.
