National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values urges University of Ghana to review gender-neutral pronoun policy

The National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values has called on the University of Ghana (UG) to urgently review its new gender policy introducing gender-neutral pronouns.

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, Chairman of the Coalition’s Governing Council, made the appeal during a media engagement in Accra.

The policy, announced by Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, was unveiled during the launch of UG’s new five-year strategic plan.

Prof. Awandare explained that the revisions reflect a shift towards a gender-inclusive stance, updating language to move away from exclusively using “he” or “she” references.

He stated that the changes align with the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of creating a vibrant and responsive governance and management system while adhering to current and emerging national and institutional policies.

However, the Coalition warned that Ghanaian law recognises only male and female genders. “We urge you to consider the potential legal and social implications of implementing such a policy.

It may lead to conflict with existing laws, potentially jeopardising the university‘s reputation and operations,” Apostle Onyinah said.

He appealed to the University to review and amend the policy, citing inconsistencies with national regulations, and called on the Office of the Vice-Chancellor to respond to the Coalition’s correspondence on the matter.
