President Mahama celebrates Christina Koch’s NASA Artemis II mission and ties to University of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has joined the University of Ghana and the nation in celebrating NASA astronaut Christina Koch on her historic membership of the Artemis II lunar mission.

He described it as a point of immense pride that Koch, the only woman on the pioneering mission, was once an exchange student at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year.

He noted that during her time at Legon, she studied the History of Ghana, History of Africa, Rural Sociology, Music, and Twi for Beginners, building a foundation of global citizenship in Accra.

Mahama highlighted Koch’s gesture of hoisting the Ghanaian flag in outer space as a deeply touching moment for Ghanaians, noting it reflects the lasting impact of her time in Ghana.

He said her journey from lecture halls at Legon to space exploration serves as an inspiration to young Ghanaians and demonstrates that Ghanaian educational institutions shape global leaders.

He wished Koch and the Artemis II crew godspeed on their return journey to Earth, expressing confidence that their success will continue to inspire generations across Ghana, Africa and the world.
