The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) task force has arrested 17 commercial drivers in Amasaman for allegedly charging unapproved transport fares, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with officially sanctioned pricing.
The arrests followed a special monitoring exercise conducted by the union in collaboration with local transport officials, after numerous complaints from commuters about arbitrary fare increases on some routes within the Amasaman enclave.

According to the GPRTU, the affected drivers were found to have disregarded approved fare structures and were overcharging passengers, particularly during peak hours.
Officials of the union said the exercise forms part of broader measures to protect commuters from exploitation and to ensure discipline among drivers.
They stressed that fare increments must only be implemented after consultations with stakeholders and official approval, in line with national transport regulations.
The arrested drivers are expected to face internal union disciplinary procedures, which may include fines, suspension, or other sanctions, depending on the outcome of investigations.
The GPRTU has reiterated its warning to all commercial drivers to strictly adhere to approved fares to avoid sanctions.
Meanwhile, the union has assured the public of its commitment to regular monitoring and enforcement to promote fairness, order, and confidence in public transport services across the country.
Commuters have also been encouraged to report cases of overcharging to union officials or the appropriate authorities for swift action.
