Both personnel sustained gunshot wounds. One officer later succumbed to his injuries, while the other was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The statement noted that the assailants reportedly made away with a motorbike and a bag belonging to the officers, but police were able to retrieve a service rifle that had been in use at the checkpoint during the attack.

Authorities assured the public that a manhunt is underway to apprehend the perpetrators of what they described as a “heinous crime.”

“We hereby appeal to the public to provide any information on the culprits to assist police investigations,” the statement added.
