NHIA announces free NHIS registration for flood-affected persons in Accra

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for persons affected by recent floods in Accra, including their dependents.

In a press release dated July 1, 2026, the NHIA said the measure is in response to the flooding situation in Accra and rising cases of diarrhoea and cholera.

The announcement was made by the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, as part of urgent public health interventions to protect residents in flood-impacted communities.

The Authority said flooding has disrupted sanitation systems, contaminated water sources and increased the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.

It stated that the free registration is intended to ensure victims and their families can access timely healthcare without financial barriers.

Dr Bampoe said no Ghanaian should be denied access to healthcare due to a natural disaster, noting the need for a swift response to prevent a potential outbreak following the floods.
