The Ghana Health Service has clarified that tricycles procured under the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) initiative are not ambulances, describing viral social media reports to the contrary as false and misleading.
In a press release dated April 18, 2026, the Service stated that the tricycles are part of efforts to strengthen community-level healthcare delivery and have previously been used successfully for outreach services.

The GHS said it has begun deploying tricycles and motorbikes nationwide to improve last-mile service delivery, particularly in rural, peri-urban, and hard-to-reach areas.
The tricycles are designed to support frontline health workers, especially Community Health Nurses within the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) system, by transporting medical supplies, vaccines, cold chain equipment, diagnostic tools, and health education materials.
Unlike motorbikes, the tricycles are equipped with cargo compartments to enhance efficiency in outreach activities and home visits.
The Service noted that the tricycles also improve safety and stability on difficult terrains and are suitable for a wider range of health workers, including female Community Health Nurses, while offering protection in adverse weather conditions.
The GHS urged the public to disregard misinformation, stating that the initiative aims to improve access to quality primary healthcare, particularly in underserved communities.
