Ghana has sharply condemned the unfolding military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a direct attack on democratic rule and a reckless effort to overturn the will of the electorate.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government is “profoundly concerned” about the takeover, which erupted just days after the country held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on November 23.

The intervention, Ghana noted, has “brazenly disrupted” the electoral process and obstructed the scheduled announcement of results on November 27, threatening to derail Guinea-Bissau’s democratic trajectory.
Ghana is calling for the swift restoration of constitutional order and insists that all electoral grievances must be addressed through peaceful, transparent and legally recognised mechanisms rather than through the use of force.
The statement also emphasised the need to safeguard civilians and foreign nationals, particularly members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission deployed in Guinea-Bissau.
Their protection and unhindered movement, Ghana stressed, “must be guaranteed without delay.”
As tensions escalate, Ghana is urging the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten the crisis.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ECOWAS and the African Union as both bodies coordinate a regional response anchored in long-standing principles of democracy, good governance and constitutional rule.
