Stop sand-winning at Nawuni water intake point – Committee chair appeals to Tamale residents

Tamale, Ghana – The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. John Oti Bless, has appealed to residents of the Tamale Metropolitan Area and surrounding communities to stop sand-winning activities at the Nawuni water intake point.

His call follows a complaint by the Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stephen Amihere-Mensah, who disclosed that ongoing sand-winning causes critical components used to pump water to the treatment plant to break down almost every month.

Hon. Oti Bless indicated that the Water Resources Commission would work with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to enforce by-laws aimed at protecting water bodies from pollution and degradation.

As part of its visit, the Committee also inspected the Dalun Water Treatment Plant in the Kumbungu Constituency.
