Hundreds of Ghanaian movie enthusiasts attended the premiere of The Fisherman at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra Mall and West Hills Mall on Friday, September 19, 2025. The event also attracted renowned creatives, media personalities, and other public figures.
Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, The Fisherman tells the story of Atta Oko, an elderly Ghanaian fisherman, who teams up with a talking fish and three young friends—Kobina (William Lamptey), Shasha (Endurance Dzedzo), and Emmanuel (Kiki-Romi)—to journey to the city in search of a loan to buy their own boat.

Atta Oko, played by Ricky Adelayitor, dreams of becoming the boat chief of his town after years of dedication. However, the position is instead given to the arrogant son of the outgoing chief, portrayed by Ajeezay, with veteran actor Fred Amugi also featuring. Despite his education, the new chief’s son struggles to understand fishing and life at sea.
Following his disappointment, Atta Oko encounters a talking fish, which he interprets as a traditional message, and joins forces with the three young friends to secure funding for a boat. Their journey to the city drives the plot, blending folklore with contemporary themes.
Patrons at the premiere praised the film for its production quality, compelling storyline, and characterisation. Film critic Tony Asankomah noted that The Fisherman “reminds you of the prospects and potential of the Ghanaian film industry and its ability to tell stories anchored in our folklore while tackling present-day issues in an entertaining way.”
The Fisherman, Ghana’s first official selection for the Venice Film Festival, has also won an award at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival. The production was by Luu Vision Media.
