Seven Arrested for Running Fake Online Food Delivery Scams in Ghana

Authorities have arrested and arraigned three additional individuals in connection with alleged fake online food delivery scams, bringing the total accused before the Accra Circuit Court to seven.

The new suspects, Godsway Dunyo, Wonder Sakpiti, and Mathew Aheto, are accused of defrauding customers who paid in advance via mobile money but never received their orders.

The initial four accused, Elliot Sotama Atsu (20), Elijah Sotama (20), Jethro Atsu (20), and Obed Selasi Agboli, were arraigned on October 15, 2025.

The seven defendants now face multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime, five counts of defrauding by false pretences, and five counts of stealing, with Agboli additionally charged with money laundering for allegedly using fraud proceeds to purchase a GH¢800,000 Mercedes-Benz E450.

All accused have pleaded not guilty and remain in lawful custody.

The Ghana Police Service Cybercrime Unit initiated the arrests following complaints and intelligence reports. Dunyo, Sakpiti, and Aheto were apprehended in Sogakope on October 1, 2025, while the alleged ringleaders were arrested on October 10 at an apartment in Haatso, Accra.

Investigations indicate that the accused set up fake online platforms and social media pages mimicking well-known food brands, including Papaye, Pizzaman, Chickenman, KFC, and Mawarko. Customers were deceived into making advance mobile money payments.

In some cases, verification links sent to victims allowed the suspects to access bank accounts linked to mobile money numbers, resulting in unauthorised withdrawals.

So far, authorities have identified five victims who lost a total of GH¢91,100, and 28 mobile phones used in the alleged schemes have been recovered. Digital forensic investigations are ongoing as police continue to trace other potential victims.
