Dr Freda Prempeh urges First Lady Lordina Mahama to intervene in Bawku defilement case involving two young sisters

Dr Freda Prempeh, a former Member of Parliament and founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation, is calling on First Lady Lordina Mahama to push for the swift arrest and prosecution of a 47-year-old man accused of defiling two sisters, aged five and seven, at Bawku in the Upper East Region.

The suspect, identified as Sulley Fongo, allegedly committed the act in an incident that has triggered public outrage and deepened the trauma of the victims and their families. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Ahafo Region, Dr Prempeh described the case as “pathetic” and said she was “dump folded” upon hearing the news.

She stressed that, as a mother, the First Lady must ensure the suspect faces justice and the affected children and their families receive the support they need. Dr Prempeh noted that her NGO works to protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable women and girls, and expressed worry over what she described as the slow response of security agencies.

According to her, incidents of defilement and abuses against girls remain among the gravest human rights violations hindering their growth and development. She called for urgent action from women’s coalitions, NGOs, child-rights groups, the Department of Social Welfare, CHRAJ, and the Gender Ministry to follow up on the case to guarantee prosecution.

Dr Prempeh warned that Ghana cannot afford to allow individuals to exploit the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy tensions to violate the rights of children, “and go scout free,” urging the government to help bring such abuses under control.
