MTN Ghana has confirmed that approximately 5,700 of its customers may have been affected by a recent cybersecurity breach. However, the company’s continued silence on its official social media platforms has sparked concern and criticism from customers, with many suspecting an attempted cover-up that could further endanger millions of Ghanaian subscribers.

In a media release dated April 28, 2025, MTN Ghana acknowledged the cybersecurity incident, stating that while its platforms remain fully operational, an ongoing forensic investigation is being conducted in collaboration with leading cybersecurity experts. The company emphasised that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its systems remain central to its operations.

“At this early stage of the investigation, we have not been able to ascertain the full extent of the incident, but early indications are that about 5,700 MTN Ghana customers’ data may have been affected,” the company said, adding that affected individuals would be contacted directly.

Despite this disclosure, the absence of any communication via MTN Ghana’s social media channels, where the majority of its customer base actively engages, has drawn sharp criticism. Some customers fear the lack of transparency could delay public awareness and necessary precautions, potentially increasing the risk of fraud or identity theft.

The company has issued general guidance for all customers, advising them to remain vigilant, update their apps and devices, use strong passwords, and avoid clicking on suspicious links. Customers are also urged not to disclose sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, or OTPs via phone, text, or email, and to activate multi-factor authentication where possible.

In response to the breach, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has issued a separate statement confirming that it is working with the Cyber Security Authority, the National Communications Authority, and the Data Protection Commission to investigate the matter. The Ministry also assured the public that affected customers would be contacted in accordance with data protection laws.

For further information, media inquiries may be directed to Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, via email at minghana.mediaoffice@mtn.com.
