President Mahama inspects new UHAS laboratory complex

President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the newly completed laboratory complex at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), describing the facility as a major milestone in Ghana’s health research and scientific innovation agenda.

The inspection formed part of his two-day “Resetting Ghana Tour” of the Volta Region, which began on Thursday, July 16.

President Mahama noted that construction of the laboratory complex began in 2014 but faced significant delays before its completion, stressing the need to deliver public infrastructure projects on schedule to avoid escalating costs.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming UHAS into a leading centre of excellence for health sciences education, research and innovation in Africa.

According to the President, the new facility is among the largest laboratory complexes in the sub-region and will significantly strengthen Ghana’s capacity for pathogen research, vaccine development and advanced medical research.

He said the laboratory will complement the work of the National Vaccine Institute while enhancing disease surveillance, scientific discovery and the development of local solutions to public health challenges.

President Mahama also acknowledged the university’s need for additional infrastructure, including student accommodation, lecture halls and a modern library, assuring the institution of continued government support.

He said recent reforms to GETFund financing will provide additional resources for priority projects in tertiary institutions to help address critical infrastructure gaps.

The President paid tribute to the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills for his vision in establishing UHAS and expressed confidence that the university is on course to becoming a globally recognised centre for health sciences education and research.
