Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Charles Owiredu Quashie, says the government has begun the final phase of its evacuation programme for Ghanaian nationals affected by recent attacks in South Africa.
Addressing members of the Ghanaian community on July 14, Mr Quashie said about 926 Ghanaians had already been repatriated under earlier phases, with nearly 900 more expected to return during the final operation.

“We are going to do the final repatriation of close to 900 Ghanaians who have voluntarily given their names here in South Africa that they want to go,” he said.
He explained that the evacuation would be carried out in phases, with flights departing daily until all registered beneficiaries had returned to Ghana.
Mr. Quashie said only Ghanaians who had completed the registration and screening process would be eligible for the exercise, stressing that no new registrations would be accepted.
He also advised registered beneficiaries to wait for official communication from the High Commission before travelling to their departure points.
The High Commissioner thanked President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for supporting the evacuation, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad.
