President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to launch the 2022 Green Ghana Day campaign by planting a tree at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra on Friday, June 10.
The initiative aims to promote environmental protection, restore degraded lands, increase public awareness on tree planting and help address the effects of climate change.

This year’s campaign targets the planting of 20 million trees nationwide as part of Ghana’s aggressive afforestation and reforestation programme to restore lost forest cover.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced the programme in Parliament, revealing that other national leaders, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Chief Justice Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, and former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama, would also participate in tree planting activities across the country.
Mr. Jinapor highlighted the growing threat of climate change, noting that Ghana has experienced a rise in temperatures, leading to challenges such as coastal flooding, droughts, irregular rainfall patterns and food insecurity.
He explained that forests remain a major solution to climate change because they absorb carbon dioxide and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The first edition of the Green Ghana Day campaign in 2021 saw more than seven million trees planted, exceeding the initial target of five million, with about 80 per cent of the trees surviving according to the Forestry Commission.
