Crime is crime: commentary rejects political justification of fraud as US arrests expose deep governance failures in Ghana

A forceful political commentary has reignited debate on crime, governance and international law enforcement in Ghana, rejecting any attempt to justify fraud on political grounds and warning that national security and future generations must never be sacrificed for electoral calculations.

The commentary, delivered in response to claims attributed to media personality Captain Smart, strongly opposes suggestions that the government should soften its pursuit of fraudsters to avoid potential backlash ahead of the 2028 elections.

The speaker describes such reasoning as dangerous, arguing that protecting Ghana from criminal networks is more important than winning votes.

According to the analysis, the real question is not about elections but about the kind of country being preserved for the next generation, warning against a future where a large segment of the youth is entrenched in criminality.

At the heart of the argument is an uncompromising principle: crime is crime.

The speaker condemns the practice of using television and radio platforms to rationalise or glorify illegal activity, insisting that fraud cannot be defended under any circumstance.

While acknowledging that individuals who have been arrested are legally suspects and entitled to due process, the commentary maintains that criminal acts themselves must never be politicised or excused.

The discussion extends to the international dimension following the arrest of Ghanaian nationals by United States authorities.

The commentary explains that these actions are grounded in law, pointing to existing extradition agreements between Ghana and the US.

It argues that when crimes are committed against American citizens, US law enforcement agencies are legally empowered to act. In this context, the presence of the FBI is portrayed not as a threat to ordinary citizens but as a direct consequence for those engaged in cross-border criminal activity.

Beyond extradition, the commentary situates recent developments within a broader geopolitical framework.

Reference is made to the visible presence of US military assets in Ghana, including the US Air Force and advanced drones.

Drawing from personal notes, the speaker speculates that this presence could relate to hybrid warfare simulations, integrated multi-agency intelligence operations, or strategic deception within global competition involving China and Russia, echoing the principle that warfare is often rooted in deception.

The analysis also highlights the domestic cost of fraud, stressing that Ghanaians themselves are major victims.

A specific example cited involves an online investment scheme linked to an entity identified as Yoko Yoko, from which over $15.1 million was reportedly recovered.

The scheme is said to have operated since 2019, wiping out life savings and, in one reported case, leading to the collapse and death of a victim.

This evidence is used to counter narratives that downplay fraud as a victimless or foreign-targeted crime.

Serious allegations are raised against the previous government, which governed for eight years.

The commentary questions why large-scale fraud operations were allowed to flourish during that period and why decisive action only emerged later.

It suggests that political protection and complicity enabled these criminal networks, alleging that some politicians worked directly with fraudsters to launder money.

According to the speaker, this failure represents a grave governance breakdown that endangered the state.

The monologue concludes with a broader social critique, urging young people to reject the illusion of a criminal “fast lane.”

The speaker argues that many Ghanaian youths deliberately choose caution and lawful paths, and that those currently facing arrest are experiencing the consequences of their own choices.

Drawing on nearly 15 years of personal experience in the United States, the commentary contrasts strict adherence to the rule of law abroad with Ghana’s more permissive environment, using everyday examples such as traffic enforcement to illustrate how discipline and accountability shape safer societies.

Ultimately, the commentary frames the current crackdown on fraud not as political persecution but as a necessary step toward sanitising the system, restoring trust in the rule of law, and safeguarding Ghana’s future beyond the next election cycle.
