Residents and businesses in several parts of Accra are expected to experience an interruption in water supply on Friday, December 19, 2025, as the Weija Water Treatment Plant undergoes a full-day shutdown for scheduled maintenance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 18, 2025, and addressed to all media houses, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced that the plant will be taken offline from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to allow for critical maintenance works.

The company explained that the exercise forms part of its ongoing efforts to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable and sustainable water supply, particularly during the Christmas season.
The temporary shutdown is expected to affect water production and distribution to Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemie, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, as well as adjoining communities.
Management of Ghana Water Limited assured stakeholders that adequate resources and logistics have been mobilised to carry out the maintenance works within the stipulated timeframe.
According to the company, water production and distribution will resume immediately after the exercise is completed. Customers in the affected areas have been advised to store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown period to reduce inconvenience.
Speaking on the importance of the exercise, the Managing Director of GWL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, said the maintenance work is crucial for sustaining the integrity of the company’s water infrastructure and improving overall service delivery.
He noted that all necessary resources have been deployed and technical teams will work diligently to complete the task as scheduled.
Ghana Water Limited expressed regret for any inconvenience the shutdown may cause and appealed for public understanding and cooperation as it works to improve service delivery.
