Haruna Iddrisu urges GESOPS to introduce housing investment packages for teachers

Minister for Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme (GESOPS) to revise its investment policy to include affordable housing packages for teachers.

Speaking at the 2025 Second Stakeholders’ Meeting themed “Our Pension, Our Future,” he said accommodation remained one of the most pressing challenges facing teachers across the country.

Mr Iddrisu revealed that the government had set up a five-member committee to explore housing options for educators, targeting two- and three-bedroom units. Such welfare-driven investments, he noted, would improve teacher motivation and enhance teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.

He further urged the GESOPS Board to manage the fund with prudence while showing greater empathy toward the welfare needs of contributors.

Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to supporting the well-being of staff throughout their careers and into retirement.

He described GESOPS as a strategic partner in securing the retirement future of education workers.

Mrs Cynthia Arthur, Chairperson of the Public Sector Workers Employees Pension Scheme (PSWEPS), commended GESOPS for its transparency and member-centred approach.

She said PSWEPS and GESOPS shared a common mission of safeguarding the retirement security of public sector employees and underscored the importance of collaboration to advance sustainable investments and member education.
